Mission of the organisation
In partnership with government, industry and the global community, Falklands Conservation will engage and empower the people of the Falkland Islands to take action with us to conserve biodiversity and manage landscapes and seascapes for the benefit of nature and people
Key Activities
- Seabird Monitoring Programme: population census, trends, diet analysis and tracking of penguin species
- Albatross and Petrel Programme: population census, trends, tracking, demography, key site management plans for the Black-browed Albatross
- Research projects: foraging of Southern Rockhopper Penguins at key sites; interaction between sheep farming and birds of prey; southern sea lions
- Community outreach: junior WATCH group and raising awareness and improving understanding of environmental issues in the community
- Botanical Surveys: habitat classification, IPA directory, priority species action plans, FI red list compilation
- National Herbarium
- Habitat Restoration and Invasives: rat eradications, invasive plant species control, tussac replanting
- Environmental advice, assistance and presentations to government, military, landowners and the public
Recent Achievements
- National Plan of Action for Seabirds (Trawlers) 2008-12 was reviewed and updated
- The Islands' first Oiled Wildlife Contingency plan was formalised in 2010, ongoing training in oiled seabird rehabilitation and plans to establish a rehabilitation centre for the islands
- Developed and produced a mitigation device for use on trawlers to directly reduce the numbers of petrels killed by the fishing fleet
- Produced a National Plan of Action (Seabirds) to reduce mortality in fisheries around the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) and worked to have this adopted by the Falkland Islands Government, which happened in March 2004
- Produced and published the Guide to Insects of the Falkland Islands
- Eradicated rats from 12 offshore islands, providing safe havens for ground nesting endemic birds
- Retrieved the first data from geo-locators fitted to Black-browed Albatrosses, providing an insight into their winter migratory patterns
- Published A Visitors Guide to the Falklands
