A Record-Breaking Global Bird Weekend

Global Bird Weekend hit an amazing milestone – with a new world record set of 7,800 bird species seen by participants around the world in a 24-hour‑period.

This October, birdwatchers from 201 countries raced to see how many bird species they could spot in a 24-hour-period during Global Bird Weekend.

BirdLife staff, supporters and our Advisory Group all went out and returned with incredible sightings, such as Spinifex Pigeon (Australia), Short-toed Treecreeper (Austria) and Great Horned Owl (United States), to name a few.

Thanks to an amazing community of supporters who supercharged their impact, we also raised over £10k to support BirdLife’s conservation work. There’s still time to support bird conservation and you can donate below.

To capture the energy and incredible enthusiasm of everyone taking part, we’re thrilled to share a wrap-up-video of some of the best moments.

A tremendous thanks to Global Birding’s Tim Appleton and Penny Robinson, Cornell’s eBird, and Swarovski Optik for making Global Bird Weekend possible, and to the World Migratory Bird Day team for their efforts.

“I’ve loved seeing so many of our staff, advisory group and supporters take part in Global Bird Weekend the last couple of years. Together we’ve seen over one thousand bird species and completed over 200 checklists. These weekends have also helped us raise over £65k for our critical conservation work, which we would not have secured without these efforts”
